The house league division of the Atom age variety was back in action and all the McDonald sponsored
teams involved were looking for a strong outing in their
second week back. Yellow and Blue, Black and Orange, White and Grey and Red and
Green were our matchups this week.
Wasting no time getting back into the swing of league play,
McDonald’s Yellow and McDonald’s Blue took to the ice before the sun made it to
the rink with their brisk 8:00 am game. The first period opened with two Blue
goals in quick succession. Joe Stinson netted a dandy at 6:31, and Jack
Hutchinson put home his own nearly a minute later. The second period was a
different story however, as Alex Weir and Dawson Howes each scored one for
Yellow, bringing the teams even. That was until with 5 seconds left in the
period, a flurry in the Yellow crease allowed Jack Hutchinson to knot his
second of the game for Blue. The third period saw three minutes go by before
Anthony Bullock and Connor Wilson teamed up to ice the game for Blue. 4-2 for
Blue was the final.
McDonald’s Black and McDonald’s Orange were up next and the
two teams kept the tempo high. Midway through the first, Quinn Schmidt put
Orange up one nothing. The score remained until with 9:19 left in the second
period, lightning struck twice, and Schmidt netted his second from Ben Lyford.
The third period allowed time for Schmidt to finish his hat-trick, and Ryan
Dennis (with the help of Jimmy Bennett) to get in on the scoring action. Black
answered with 2:25 left in the game off a goal from Liam Robinson, but it was
too little too late, and Orange took it 4-1.
In the third game of the morning McDonald’s White and
McDonald’s Grey took to the ice. With 6:20 on the clock in the first period,
Christopher Blair opened the game’s scoring. The period ended with the score
1-0 for White. In the second period, Jackson Fawdry aided White’s cause by
putting up a goal of his own. But Grey answered on the next two consecutive
shifts, with goals from Dean Palimaka and Ewan Morrison. The second period ended
with the score set at 2-a-side. In the third, the teams played scoreboard
ping-pong as they traded goals. Luke West and Jacob Graham netted the go ahead
goal with 9:31 left in the game. Morrison pulled Grey back even off the feed
from Mason Minielly with his second. Then six minutes later, Dan Gratton pulled
Grey ahead once more. But the ever-scrappy White team came back again with
Chris Blair’s second (this time from Greg Van Heyst, and Brent Menheere) to
knot up this evenly set match up at the game final 4-4.
And in the final ice time McDonald’s Green and McDonald’s
Red played in a Christmas time “Jingle Bell Rock em Sock em” matchup. The first
period only saw one goal on the board coming from Green’s Josh Gibson (Costa
Columbo on the assist.) In the second, Red’s offensive engine started firing on
all cylinders and they took off with three goals. (Matteo Troiani with one, and
two for Tyler Caron) The Green team clawed back with a marker from Jack
Symington in the third, but Red’s Matteo Troiani lit the lamp twice more after
that to bring the score to 5-2 for his team, and end the 11th week of Atom
House League Hockey.
