Sarnia Minor Midgets split Pair with Cambridge Hawks Saturday and Sunday Nov. 24,25/12
Sarnia Sting Minor Midgets defeated first place Cambridge Hawks at Sarnia Arena, Saturday by the score of 6 to 4 then

dropped a 4-2 decision to them back at Preston Arena in Cambridge on Sunday.

Saturday’s game saw the Sting get a great start when Blain Adams fired a hard shot into the left side of the net after being fed the puck by Dillon Saunders at 8:43. Jeff Williams added to the score with a goal low along the ice at 7:04. Devin Butler and Gage Riddoch drew assists on the play. We were entertained with a referee’s uniform malfunction with his pants following the goal.

Cambridge fought back with two quick goals at 12:52 and 10:08 of the second to tie the score. Sarnia took the lead again at 7:25 on a spectacular weaving rush by Kyle Adams resulting in the unassisted goal. Not to be outdone, the Hawks scored at 6:08 on the power play to tie the score again. The back and forth action continued when Callahan Doughty drove one home near the end of the period at 1:59 assisted by Michael Pearce. Cambridge came right back with the tying goal again at 1:11 when number 17 split the defense to fire one past Lauzon in Sarnia’s net.

Sarnia, undaunted, took the lead again at 17:14 of the third on a hard slap shot by Michael Pearce from the blue line that knuckled down under the goalie’s glove. Adriano Fuoco drew the assist on the goal. Pearce then scored the insurance goal as well deflecting in a slap shot by Devin Butler at 13:55. A string of penalties followed for the rest of the game. Shots on goal close 28 to 32 in favour of Sarnia.

Sunday’s away game was a tougher one. The Hawks were on the board first with a power play goal at 10:58. Sarnia responded when Dillon Saunders drove the puck home at 3:49 assisted by Blain Adams. Before the period ended, Cambridge went up 2-1 with another power play goal at 1:30.

Sarnia continued to be assessed a string of penalties in the second. Dillon scored a short handed goal on one of those penalties to even the score again at two. However, Cambridge added two more power play goals before the break to take a 4-2 lead after two.

An apparent miscall, sent Devin Butler to the showers early for a ‘hit from behind’ assessment at 10:13 of the third. Saunders completed his hat trick on a power play at 4:14 of the third assisted by Richard McIntosh. It brought the Sting close. Although the Sting defense was strong and held off Cambridge and Matt Szabo kept the shots out of his net, Sarnia couldn’t muster a goal to tie it up. Cambridge out shot Sarnia 27 to 20. Cambridge was assessed 12 minutes in penalties compared to 20 plus two General Misconducts for Sarnia.
