Saturday evening, Sarnia Sting MD Midgets travelled to London to face the Oakridge Aeros at Oakridge Arena. They came from behind to stun the home town supporters with a 4-3 win in the dying seconds of the game.
At 12:41 of the first, Oakridge scored on Noah Melanson in Sarnia’s net to take an early lead. Sarnia needed to engage the rusher more as they came up the ice and across the blue line. At the 2:30 mark, Joey Austin evened the score at 1 on a feed from Devin Butler. Owen Gibson stepped up the hitting before the end of the period on a solid hit to an Oakridge rusher.
In the second Oakridge scored two goals at 11:00 and 6:59 taking advantage of some sloppy play by the Sting. Ryan Walker got Sarnia on track again with a goal at 6:29 assisted by Kevin Durco. Noah Melanson held the team in with a great save on a penalty shot called just before the end of the period.
Devin Butler tied the game with a goal on a sharp move behind the defense at 7:10 of the third. A head check penalty sent number 2 from Oakridge to the box with only 40 seconds left in the game. Ryan Walker took advantage with the power play winning goal with only 9.3 ticks left on the clock. Durco assisted on the goal that left Oakridge shocked at the loss.
