Sting Capture West Alliance Championship
The Sarnia Sting Major Bantam MD team has captured the West Alliance Championship by defeating the London Oakridge Aeros. The Sting continue to build on their successful season and move on to the Alliance Provincial championship in St. Catherines.
The Sting won the first game of the series 2-1 in a tight game at Clearwater Arena. Sting goaltender Cameron Stevens turned in an outstanding effort keeping his team in the game despite being outshot by the Aeros.
The second game was played in London at the Oakridge Arena. The Sting had a difficult time staying out of the penalty box and fought off the Oakridge power play for the majority of the game. Sting goaltender Lennex Jagoo kept the Sting in the game with his stellar play as long as he could, however, the penalties eventually cost the Sting. The Sting were downed 4-1 and had to count on a better effort in game 3.
Game 3 was played at the SSEC in Sarnia. The Sting once again continued their parade to the penalty box which stifled any early momentum in the game. Thankfully for the Sting, Oakridge was also having the same difficulties and the game appeared to be decided by who had the better power play. The Sting began scoring in the second period and never looked back. The Sting ultimately won the game 5-2 and were crowned as the Alliance West Champions.
Looking to the Alliance Provincial Championships the Sting will have to again overcome the Oakridge Aeros who also qualified from the West Region. Also qualifying from the East Region are The Hamilton Bulldogs - White and the Hamilton Bulldogs - Red.
The Sting have, to this point, had an incredibly successful season. Their record currently stands at 51 wins, 7 losses, and 3 ties. They have captured 4 tournament championships, including the International Silver Stick. They are also the Alliance West league champs, playoffs champions and now playdown champions.
