After we have all the rooms booked for the January tournament, we’ll send out the links for the Pro Oil Change House League Select Tournament, Mar. 27-29 in Barrie (likely the Holiday Inn Express & Suites, 506 Bryne Dr. Barrie ON L4N 9P6) and the Select Provincials in Brantford, April 3-5. We stay at the Best Western Brantford Hotel & Conference Centre, 19 Holiday Drive, Brantford.

We have paid and are confirmed entries in all 3 tournaments.

Congratulations to John Stathakis for making the Northern Basketball team. Unfortunately for us, the basketball commitment has forced John to drop us from his social calendar. We knew this going into tryouts but our fingers were crossed that John wouldn’t make the basketball team. Good luck this year at basketball John! In John’s place is Noah Griffith. Noah is a fast skating, versatile player who is just as comfortable as a forward as he is at defence. Welcome to the team Noah (btw Noah, your team number is 7 since 8 and 18 are taken).

All of the House League team rosters have been submitted and approved by their respective coaches with Sarnia Hockey so I can now submit our Select team roster to our Select Convenor and the Registrar for approval which will also allow our Jersey order to be submitted. Please let me know if I’ve made a mistake here:

Owen 5 Small / Morgan 6 Small / Griffin 7 Large / Smith 8 Large / Goulet 9 Small / Rawana 11 Small / Legghio-Traxler 14 Medium / Jennings 15 Medium / Jansen 16 Medium / Hurst 18 XL / Leblanc 21 XL / Sharpe 24 Small / Westfall 31 Goalie / Gibbs 40 Goalie / Mathieson 42 XL / Fenwick 77 Small / Weir 85 XL / Hunt 88 XL (text me at 519-331-4536 to correct my mistakes or changes).

We’re off to a great start with our 5-2 win a week ago Friday. Thank you everyone for getting the boys down to Brantford. They were a gutsy, hard working Bantam Minor Select team that never quit. For several of you it was a chance to see for the first time where we’ll be in April for the Provincials. Our boys worked hard, listened and played good clean hockey from beginning to end. They were a pleasure to coach both on the ice and off of it.

Our scrimmage last night was a blast. We mixed our Select team with the MD team for 2 reasons. 1) We wanted the Select players to skate alongside the MD team so they see that there isn’t much difference between us and them which should give our boys some added confidence moving forward. 2) We may or may not have been ready to play the Bantam Minor MD team head to head after only 3 practices. The MD team is well seasoned with 2 practices per week since the beginning of September, 2 tournaments under their belt with a 2nd place and a 1st place overall a week ago at their London tournament. They are also in a tie for first place in their Alliance MD division with 16 games played so far this year, plus tournaments and exhibition games. Although there isn’t much difference in skill, that team is very, very competitive, very aggressive and very well practiced at playing as a very tight unit on every line at every moment of the game. We might have been setting ourselves up for a result that would have done more harm than good.

Also, the MD players wanted to skate with their buddies more so than against them. Their team was looking for some no pressure fun for the first time in a couple of months. Ending in a 3-3 tie was great ending and the added twist of the 3 on 3 mini tournament just added icing to the cake. We made sure that everyone went home tired and happy. In January, I’ve asked that we play each other straight up as a warm up for our tournament.
