WELCOME TO U10 BB!
Coach Chris here, and I'm very much looking forward to having another successful season of Sting Hockey!
I wanted to give a bit more information on what to expect in the upcoming U10 BB evaluation process.
There will be a brief 5-minute warmup prior to getting into the evaluations to stretch out the legs, but then we will get down to business.
The first two skates will largely be a "Skills & Drills" format with a lot of timed events. We will be doing a lot of stuff on the stopwatch and speed will be key.
As an example we will be conducting a timed obstacle course (with and without a puck) as well as looking at shot accuracy and speed with the radar gun. There will also be plenty of skating and battle drills where we will be looking at speed/endurance/compete level.
There is likely to be some downtime between stations where players will be waiting patiently for their turn to go and this too is part of the evaluation process (coachability).
For the first two skates it may be the case that we do not use the entire 90 mins of ice time (as this is not a practice but an evaluation skate) and in the end it's about giving me the opprotunity to see what our players can do currently versus coaching them to do it better. In short summary I am not looking to maximize ice utilization but rather gather player data, and if it only takes 80 minutes to get the information I want then so be it and we will end early.
Goalies will be involved in some separate evaluations apart from the players at one of the two sessions but they will be expected to participate in a lot of the skating and endurance aspects as well.
The third and fourth skates are going to be intersquad exhibition. Here we will be looking a lot more at compete level and hockey IQ.
All players are guaranteed 3 skates. I would ask our players to arrive 30 minutes prior to ice time in order to get signed in and receive their evaluation pennies. I would ask players to please keep their tryout pennies until the end of the 3rd skate at which point I will collect them and reissue them prior to the final skate. Please do NOT lose them as these need to be returned to SMHA at the conclusion of tryouts.
Tryout updates will be posted to our team page here.
For those players who make the final roster there will be a mandatory parent meeting on
Monday June 17th at 7:00 PM. Additional details are posted to our team calendar on the event page. This will be parent only and would ask that at least one parent/guardian attend (but both is preferred).
As always if you have any questions or concerns don't hesitate to reach out to me at
[email protected].
Looking forward to seeing you all at the rink!
Coach Chris
